The small planet of Kalaupapa, on the outer edge of the Molokai'i Star System, is well known throughout the galaxy as the premiere dwelling of the defiled. It earned its reputation in 9755, after Khan'eha Neha, King of the Molokai'i Empire of the Sovereign Star, banished all political dissidents to the icy world. To justify the move, King Khan claimed that the expelled suffered from the rare but highly communicable disease, Reaver Fever. Kalaupapa was quarantined and established as The Molokai'i's Royal Reaver Rehabilitation Centre & Day Spa.

As word spread, leaders from throughout the quadrant found Kalaupapa's reaver colony a convenient place to deposit their unmentionables. With epidemics cropping up throughout many of the small independent dictatorships on the rim, Kalaupapa saw its population explode. To keep them occupied, patients were put to work making lace doilies and reusable adult diapers for export. Eventually, these became the backbone of a successful geriatric accessories industry.

With the advent of affordable interstellar travel, Kalaupapabecame a popular rest spot for starship pilots on their way out of the Molokai'i system. That added a new dimension to the local economy, introducing tourist traps and seedy motels.

Today, Kalaupapa is a small but self sustaining world orbiting on the outer edge of one of one of the biggest tourist destinations in the galaxy. While the high priced luxury resorts that have swept over and tahitiformed the inner worlds of Wailuku, Kaunakakai, and Hiuanaleiia, the quaint and honest towns and countryside of Kalaupapa have become a refuge for the middle and working class seeking a bit of fun in Molokai'i at a discount.

You can expect to pay anywhere from 50 UC per night for a space motel to 1200 UC for an evening in the penthouse of the Kalaupapa Hilton. On average, though, a room will set you back about 250 UC. To preserve and present the culture and history of the planet, most hotels are located in former hospitals and hospices, many of which have maintained their feeling of authenticity by keeping well below galactic hygiene codes.

The natural beaches of Kalaupapa can't be compared to the fine grain holosand of the inner world resorts, of course, but even here we see the charming connection to history. Headstones line the boardwalks that border the public beaches, and what initially appears to be a distant breakwater is revealed, through bionic optical implants, to in fact be mass underwater graves.

It's the little things, like the frequent nods to a unique history, that make a vacation on Kalaupapa well worth the many painful and disfiguring inoculations that most health and travel insurance providers require of visitors. They make the former reaver colony an ideal destination for those who want something more than just surf, sun, and never ending sex on their few short days off every year. Just avoid the roving bands of disfigured orgiastic blood fiends.
