The revving of engines, the pew-pewing of lasers, and the smell of antimatter in the morning. These are just some of the signs that destruction is in the air, as the annual Fighter Ace star fighter tournament looms on the horizon. The competition promises to be the most exciting thing to hit our quadrant of the galaxy since roller derby, now that the Trans-Sagittarius Xtreme 'Nittin' Championships have been cancelled.
This year's tournament has seen a huge influx of young pilots desperately willing to risk life and limb for a mite of public recognition. The starting lineup announced so far could easily be mistaken for a page from the latest Black Order yearbook. Though several other teams have shown some interest, there's been almost no competition, numbers wise.
The next major contender for the best organization, or "best IPO", award is Nos Operor, a team so low profile its members don't even remember that they're a part of the group. They're followed quite unceremoniously by Axis Inc, who has just barely fielded enough competitors to qualify despite being widely regarded as the largest qualified .
In fact, there have been a number of notable omissions from the roster so far. Even Axis's two pilots dwarf the turnout by the notoriously aggressive Genesis Industries, or the wholly sociopathic Crimson Empire. Neither have endorsed a single pilot.
"It would be nice to see someone from Gen.I compete," says smbh, one of the few Genesis Industries members to respond to JENI's inquiries. "Maybe even win something. But, in general, my interest is rather low."
"Genesis doesn't seem to care too much for community events or planning, and so it wasn't really a surprise to me that they didn't want to participate," says Benzin, an ambassador with Axis Incorporated. "And while I would definitely like to see more Axis members turn out to the event, people seem to be getting bored and frustrated with the technical limitations that the current generation of combat simulator ships offer."
However, almost in spite of this, fighter applications continue to roll in at a rate that has organizers looking at booking a second venue.
"Due to the large number of entrants, we may split the competition across two arenas for the preliminary rounds," said Fighter Ace project leader Richard "Craw Daddy" Woods. "The large number of competitors also means that people may have to be kicked from the sidelines if they are not currently involved in the tournament."
Of course, regardless the number of people who ultimately make good on their promise to participate, JENI will be following the tournament closely.
